Project: My Own Bed was conceived in April 2019 by a BIA Member and program volunteer and is the community service project of the OSY program. OSY develop their project management and customer service skills while serving the community. Families who are in need of children's beds are referred to us from local community organizations and we provide them with bunk beds and bedding.
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) awarded Project My Own Bed its Best Community Service Project Conducted in May 2021. |

We've continued to respond to the requests of local families throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. As children are spending more time at home than before, a dedicated space to sleep, think and play is more important than ever. We are currently accepting referrals from community based organizations.

Another successful delivery! We received a referral from Unite Us for a family of 4 in need of bedding for their 2 teenage daughters. The girls each received their own along with sheets, comforters and pillows. After being homeless for some time, the girls we extremely grateful to have their own beds and have a place to sleep comfortably at night now.

We were very happy when Black Child Legacy referred a family needing beds for 3 boys who have gone without for 5 months. Their beds were broken and the family recently moved into a new home. Our OSY were able to deliver and assemble a bunk bed as well as a single bed. The boys were excited to receive their own beds and sleep comfortably now! |

This delivery was just in time for the holidays and on Victor's 10th birthday! Due to outgrowing his bed, he did not have a bed of his own to rest on. Because of his autism, Victor's mother Justine has to provide around the clock care while her husband was out of work because of a medical issue. With donations and the help of our OSY volunteers, we were able to gift Victor all the bed essentials he needs as well as a learning tablet and weighted comforter and vest. Our Out of School Youth (OSY) volunteers help deliver and assemble beds for children that don't have anywhere to sleep. Here is one of our OSY Individuals speaking about his involvement in Project My Own Bed and the impact this program has had on him.

We are so happy the Immigration Integration and Empowerment organization reached out to us for for final delivery in April. The family had arrived to the United States in 2019 and have been unable to obtain most furniture pieces, including beds. We were able to provide 2 bunk beds for 4 children who now have a place to sleep! It is with much appreciation to Winsol Groundworks for helping out with this delivery! |

April seems to be a busy month with all these requests for beds coming in. We are so happy Sacramento Children's Home reached out to us and thanks to our sponsor, we were able to make this happen! This third delivery in April was for 2 children. They had been sharing the bed with the mother and now they are able to have their own place to sleep. We could not have done this delivery without our generous sponsors at RDO Equipment Co! |

The delivery for this day was to a family with 3 daughters. The mother was in the process of applying for disability and was unable to purchase new beds at the moment. We were able to provide beds for the 2 oldest daughters. With current restrictions, our OSY volunteers are unable to help assemble the beds; however, these families are still super grateful that we can still make these deliveries. |

Our second delivery for this day was for a family with a son undergoing treatment for cancer. This family was referred to us by a local nonprofit organization aimed at providing assistance to children battling cancer. We were able to provide a total of 4 beds for this family. We would not be able to do this without our amazing sponsor, Lennar.

When we do PMOB deliveries, we love getting them done in pairs! Helping two families in one day is not only gratifying but provides extra practice for our OSY and our volunteers. This family was referred to us from Impact Sacramento. It was a grandmother who became caretaker for her 5 grandchildren. We are so happy Impact Sacramento reached out to us to help. |

The start of the holiday season is here and our OSY had its fourth Project: My Own Bed install the very same weekend. This family was referred to us from a local ministry and they had barely any furniture in their home. One of the children was diagnosed with cancer and after his treatments, he would have to sleep on the couch. Thanks to local donors, we were able to provide several beds and even a gaming console. |

On our third run of Project: My Own Bed, we had three OSY volunteers assemble a bunk bed for a family in South Sacramento. The volunteers had to work together to make sure everything was assembled correctly and use their communication skills to determine what was right. They put the bed together in record time and the family couldn't have been happier. |
May 3, 2019:
We had a practice run during which OSY participated in the transportation, delivery and assembly of 9 beds in one home. The children ranged from 3 to 14 years of age. These children, along with their mothers, had previously utilized a vehicle for over three years to meet their need for shelter and sleeping. Upon arrival at the two bedroom apartment, our team found absolutely no furniture in the bedrooms. The wonderful smiles on the faces of the children and their mothers, once the bunk beds were assembled, the mattresses in place, and the colorful bedding with new pillows fitted to the beds, were priceless! We delivered HOPE to these families which far exceeded their wildest expectations! This practice run was financed in part by SRBX, who awarded us the Construction in the Community Grant at its annual Industry Lunch. Thank you, SRBX! |
